World models that talk, a cheaper computer-use model, and agents that know when to stop and ask.
Google DeepMind · Oct 27 · Research preview
DeepMind's new world model generates the scene and the audio in real time: wind, waves, characters who talk back. A Gemini "director" watches each frame and keeps the scene on track while you steer it with plain language. Still a trusted-tester preview, with SynthID on every frame — but the jump from silent diorama to a talking world is the real story.

OpenAI · Oct 26 · API + ChatGPT Work / Codex
The mid-tier model built for screen work — reading documents, filling forms, typing invoices into accounting software — now costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output, half of GPT-6.1 Sol. OpenAI's own numbers claim Terminal-Bench 4.0 up from 21.5% to 50.3% and error rates collapsing from 53.6% to 16.7% at low effort. Vendor benchmarks, obviously — but the price direction for agentic computer-use is unmistakable: down, fast.
🔗 Callout — Hermes agent harness / Local LLM stacks paired with Jev: Don't buy this as a local replacement — it's cloud, and the local-first stance stands. Do steal its lesson: computer-use is now a commodity-priced capability, so the Hermes desktop app's edge has to be local control and trust, not just "an agent that clicks things." Watch Terra's computer-use patterns for ideas worth porting to the local stack.

FireMon · Oct 27 · Due November
Three agents — plain-language policy questions, firewall-rule recommendations, and staged policy-change plans — with one genuinely good design choice: when a request has multiple valid answers, the agent stops and asks a human instead of guessing. Nothing deploys automatically, ever. This is how you ship agents into infrastructure without lying to yourself about it.
🔗 Callout — Hermes efficiency tool stack / Muse–Hermes relay: Steal the pattern, not the product. "Pause on ambiguous alternatives" is exactly the approval-gate philosophy already in place for Hermes — worth naming explicitly in the next harness directive so Morty treats ambiguity as a stop sign, not a coin flip.

Calix · Oct 27 · Hugging Face
A Llama-based 8B model fine-tuned on networking protocols, access/edge networks, Linux and comms hardware — weights on Hugging Face, eval framework on GitHub. The specialist-model thesis in miniature: bake the expertise into the weights and a small model does a job that used to need a big one plus a pile of docs.
🔗 Callout — Home intranet on LAN: Watch, don't download yet. If the intranet build ever needs a networking-troubleshooting brain, this is the eval candidate — test it against the actual home-network questions first, and only then decide whether a specialist beats the general Qwen pair.

The CPU wars go agentic, and Apple finally does the thing it swore it never would.
NVIDIA × Oracle · Oct 27 · OCI general availability
This is NVIDIA's first unbundled CPU at a major hyperscaler: the 88-core Vera, LPDDR5X-9600, more than doubling a dual Xeon 6980P system on Stream bandwidth in independent testing — and reportedly strong on the boring stuff that actually matters, Python and SQLite. The pitch is "agentic AI," but the wedge is memory bandwidth: agents spend their lives waiting on memory, not crunching FLOPs. Vera Rubin NVL72 racks scale to multi-gigawatt alongside it.
🔗 Callout — Dynamic VRAM spillover / Local LLM stacks paired with Jev: Watch only — no home-lab buy here, it's hyperscaler silicon. But the lesson lands at home: the pooled A770 pair's real constraint was never raw compute either, it was memory movement. Every KV-cache and spillover decision should be argued in bandwidth terms first.

Vera Rubin, 6th-gen AMD EPYC, Intel's Diamond Rapids "Xeon 7," Google TPUs (their first non-Google hyperscaler deployment, starting 2027), Cerebras CS3, SambaNova — all on OCI with its Acceleron fabric. The single-vendor cloud era is over; the pitch is now "match the workload to the chip." TrendForce, meanwhile, projects server CPU shipments up 40%+ in 2027 with ARM at ~30% of the market. The CPU is back, and it's back because of agents.

Apple · Event today, 10 a.m. PT, Los Angeles
After years of "no, the Mac is not a touchscreen device," Apple is reportedly unveiling 14" and 16" MacBook Pros with touch-enabled tandem OLED displays, a Dynamic Island instead of a notch, and M5 Pro/Max chips — lighter, pricier (up to $500 over today's $2,499/$2,999 starting points), with touch framed as an additional input, not a replacement. A cheaper M6 MacBook Pro, an M6 iMac and a revamped iPad mini are also tipped, with sales from November 6. Watch the event today; the reversal itself is the story.

💻 Software
A 15-year-old lie gets fixed, Plasma gets a polish pass, and Fedora counts down to ship day.
KDE · Oct 27
Second bugfix release in the 6.8 series: multi-screen regressions (vanishing desktop icons, wallpaper resets, Activity Switcher stretching wallpapers on non-16:9 panels), a 2,000-point cap on System Monitor chart history so a misconfigured widget can't freeze the desktop, plus KWin crash hardening and RDP/KPipeWire fixes. No new features — which is exactly why it's a safe, boring, welcome update.
🔗 Callout — Hermuse command center / Omarchy desktop: Take it when it lands in the Arch repos. Multi-screen fixes matter disproportionately on this desk — the Ark's multiview setup is exactly the kind of panel arrangement these regressions bite. Low risk, real payoff.

KDE Frameworks 6.32 · Due Nov 13
Filed in 2011, bug 281270: file copies reported completion while data was still sitting in RAM, and moves could delete the source prematurely. The fix uses sync_file_range() with an adaptive writeback window — honest progress without slowing copies down. Mainly a win for removable and network storage. Fifteen years for a progress bar to mean what it says. Respect.

Fedora · RC Oct 28 · Ships Nov 3
The release candidate is out and the countdown is on. Nothing to install today — but if any VM or test box is due a refresh, this is the image to wait for, not the one to grab early.
🔗 Callout — Windows, macOS, and Kali Linux VMs: When the VM builds get the go, pair this with the Kali 2026.3 image below (kernel 7.1.5, six new tools) rather than reaching for older ISOs. Fresh images, fewer post-install surprises.
Source: Linux Compatible archive, Oct 28.
Kali · Oct 26
The third Kali release of the year jumps the kernel from 6.19 to 7.1.5, adds Plasma 6.7 for the KDE edition, and brings Dalfox, Katana, qsreplace, RustScan, SDRangel and snaffler-ng — plus containerized build scripts via Docker/Podman so custom ISOs stop drifting with the host. A solid, unglamorous release: exactly what a pentest distro should be.

🎮 Video games
Halloween week does what Halloween week does: detectives, dread, and free stuff.
Raw Fury / Spooky Doorway · Oct 27 · Game Pass, PS5, XSX, Switch 2
The first-person supernatural detective game — Victorian Ireland, vanished Evelyn Deane, interrogations where a suspect's appearance is itself evidence — lands on Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 a year after PC, day one on Game Pass. A detective game where noticing things is the mechanic, just in time for Halloween. Yes.

Red Barrels · Oct 27 · Switch 2
A surprise Switch 2 release for the co-op survival-horror title, plus its Season 7.2 Geister event. Cold War Murkoff experiments, teams of up to four, now portable. Nintendo's horror shelf keeps getting deeper — Mouthwashing arrives on Switch October 29 too.

Steam · Oct 27 · Free to keep
Today's claim-and-keep batch: Outcast Tales, The Onion Voting Simulator 3D, Playable Archive, A Northern Evil: Tape One and Goddess Cultivation: Idle RPG. The Onion Voting Simulator alone earns the click. Also out yesterday: Remothered: Red Nun's Legacy, the trilogy's final chapter — classic survival horror with an Italian neo-giallo twist — and Arc Raiders update 2.3.0.

⭐ GitHub repos
Click a column header to sort. Yes, the entire trending page is agents again — and the #1 repo is still the one that reverse-engineers anything.
| Repo ▾ | What it is | Stars today | Total |
| morluto/rea | Point an agent at any app and learn how it works — binaries, Electron, .NET, web | ~4,774 | ~400k |
| Nutlope/hallmark | Anti-AI-slop design skill for Claude Code, Cursor and Codex | 2,830 | ~40k |
| Gathin23/cleanyourtv | Debloat any Android/Google TV over Wi-Fi, Apple-TV-style launcher | ~2,616 | ~43k |
| makecindy/cindy | Open-source AI agent that works out of the box | 1,465 | ~7.3k |
| nightly-labs/openbot | Local-first desktop workspace for persistent AI teammates | ~777 | ~2.2k |
🔗 Callouts:
• REA reverse-engineering toolkit — rea holding #1 two days running validates the pick; it changes nothing about the gate. Recommendation: still no install until Matt answers the 5 open questions.
• Hermes efficiency tool stack adoption — hallmark is the third anti-slop design skill crowding the list. Recommendation: compare it against the already-approved design-taste-frontend skill before adopting another taste skill; don't stack two.
• Riley Brown video picks (#1, vibecode TV software) — cleanyourtv is the debloat half of that project. Recommendation: check the TV's make/model and OS first (the standing gate); if it's Android/Google TV, this is the starting point.
• Hermuse command center — openbot's local-first multi-agent workspace is adjacent, not a replacement. Recommendation: watch only; Hermuse stays phone-first.
• Hermes agent harness — cindy: skip as a replacement; its out-of-box onboarding is the only thing worth borrowing.
