Decision models are having a moment — and one of them landed today, open-weight.
Drex Max v1: a 27B decision model, open-weight, answering in one pass
Nace AI released Drex Max v1 as open weights today: a dense 27B multimodal decision model with a 262,144-token window that returns a probability for every option in one forward pass — no text generation required. It ships in bf16, Q8_0 GGUF and affine Q4 checkpoints, with forks of llama.cpp and Ollama, scoring a reported 67.52 on Decision Index 0.4 (6.27 points ahead of Drex v2.0), 97.3 on InfographicVQA and 81.9 in its Tools area. That is a very different shape from a chatbot: a model you ask "which of these?" and get calibrated numbers back, fast. The benchmarks are vendor-reported, so the score is a claim, not a verdict — but the weights are public, which means the claim is checkable.

🧮 Drex Max weight math — why quantization is the whole story
27 billion parameters. Slide the precision and watch the weight footprint — before any KV cache at all.
At bf16 this is a data-centre model. At Q4 it is a single-big-card conversation — which is precisely why the Q4 checkpoint, not the headline score, is the news for a home lab.
Mistral Large 4: a 1-trillion-parameter flagship, open weights with a catch
Mistral calls Large 4 "our flagship 1-trillion-parameter, natively multimodal model," with weights on Hugging Face (initial release commit dated October 29) and self-hosting via vLLM or SGLang. The catch sits in the licence: businesses operating a Model-as-a-Service offering need a separate commercial licence from Mistral. A trillion parameters is not a home-lab model by any honest measure — it is a statement that the open-weights frontier now includes the flagship tier, with the monetisation moved from the weights to the service layer. Performance claims are vendor-side and not yet independently tested.
Microsoft's Mage-VL-Cowork: a 4B computer-use model under Apache-2.0
Microsoft's Mage-VL-Cowork is an open-weight 4B model built to operate through graphical interfaces or persistent terminal shells for computer use and workflow automation, reporting 66.0% on OSWorld-Verified at a 50-step budget, under Apache-2.0. October's tracker counted 48 model releases from 37 vendors, 27 of them open-weight — and this is the one sized for the lab: 4B is small enough to serve next to anything, and a GUI-agent benchmark is the exact task the lab's browser-automation work cares about.
October, swept: 105 entries, and Terra is still the mid-tier value pick
CSuite's October roundup — 105 entries from 59 vendors, prices and scores re-read on November 1 — keeps its verdict simple: if you buy mid-tier tokens, test GPT-6.1 Terra first, at $1/$5 per million input/output tokens and 51 on the Artificial Analysis index at maximum effort, about half the price of the models beside it. The roundup also sweeps up fourteen late-month entries it had missed, from Kimi K3.1 Pro (open weights scheduled November 4) to FLUX 3 Image Klein, the open image model that fits an 8GB card. A month with 48 releases is not a market; it is a firehose. Roundups like this one are the filter.

🖥️ Computer hardware
Yesterday's absurdity is today's floor price.
The RTX 5080 now sells for more than the 5090 launched at
The RTX 5080 has surged past $2,000 at US retailers — up $800 in two months from a $999 launch MSRP — with the cheapest Newegg listing at $2,400 at publication time and extreme listings to $5,000. The 5090's scarcity is worse: only three units on Newegg, each at a fixed $10,000. Board partners reportedly can no longer place orders for the flagship, and the rumour mill says Nvidia is funnelling top chips to data centres. Nvidia insists the 5090 is not discontinued and has not explained the 5080's store disappearance. Rumour is not announcement — but a $10,000 listing is a fact, and it is doing the talking.

AMD lines up price hike #4 of 2026 — and this one lands in the holiday window
AMD is lining up its fourth Radeon price increase of 2026, aimed at November, per PC Games Hardware via ChannelGate: another rise on GPU + GDDR6 kits sold to board partners, after increases in January (5–10%), August (at least 10%) and October (about 10%), driven by GDDR6 prices up 8–10% in Q3. No percentage is published for November — the report calls it only "substantial" — and AMD has not confirmed it. With a roughly three-week lag from partner cost to shelf price, the damage lands mid-December, right in the holiday shopping season. Black Friday, November 27, is the day the absorption question gets answered.
| 2026 step | Scope | Size | Driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Radeon cards | 5–10% | GDDR6 shortage |
| August 1 | GPU + GDDR6 kits | ≥10% | GDDR6 spot prices ~3× since late 2025 |
| October 1 | GPUs, AM5 chipsets, GDDR6 | ~10% | TSMC wafer costs, expensive memory |
| November (planned) | GPU + GDDR6 kits | Not specified | Continued GDDR6 inflation |

The crisis gauge reads 97/100 — and two cards are still below MSRP
DropReference's November 1 UK dashboard puts the GPU market at pressure index 97/100: average price gap vs MSRP +41.0% across 10 chipsets, 30-day minimum-price change +14.1%, six models expensive and rising, two still below MSRP (buying opportunities, in the dashboard's words). The extremes tell the story — RTX 5090 minimum £5,520, +206.8% vs MSRP, while the RTX 5070 sits 12.6% below MSRP. A market where the flagship costs triple and the mid-range costs less than list is not a market; it is a rationing system with a clearance bin.
🧩 Software
November's first ISO, and a boot fix measured in minutes saved.
Arch Linux 2026.11.01: kernel 7.2.11, systemd 262.1, and a reminder not to reinstall
Arch's November installation snapshot, 2026.11.01, ships Linux kernel 7.2.11 (up from 7.2.7), systemd 262.1, mkinitcpio 42.2, curl 8.23, OpenSSH 10.6p1, Python 3.14.9, Btrfs-progs 7.3 and XFSProgs 7.2.1, plus LLVM/Clang 23.1.4, Go 1.27.3, Node.js 26.13, Rust 1.99.1 and Qt 6.12, with Pacman 7.1 development builds in the repos. The standing Arch truth applies with full force: existing users do not download this. They run pacman -Syu. The ISO is for fresh installs only — a dated photograph of a rolling release, useful exactly once.
pacman -Syu morning, not a project, and the Pacman 7.1 dev builds are a watch item, not an install — the package manager is the last thing to beta-test on a working system.Kernel 7.4: a boot-time fix that turns minutes into milliseconds
The Linux 7.4 merge window is open, targeting a late-December stable release (possibly slipping to mid-January with Torvalds on his annual vacation during the window), and its most quotable change is gloriously unglamorous: a binary search replacing a linear search in the early-boot memory allocator, cutting kernel-handover memory retrieval from about 268 seconds to about 50 milliseconds. Kernel 7.3 shipped October 18; 7.4-rc1 is expected around November 1. Nobody buys a kernel for one allocator fix — but everybody with a slow-booting machine benefits from it, which is the whole point of boring, excellent engineering.

Two dates to circle this week, and one Halloween clock running out.
Zero Parades: Director's Cut hits consoles Tuesday — 40,000 new words, and a studio in the news for the wrong reason
ZA/UM's espionage RPG Zero Parades: Director's Cut lands on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on Tuesday, November 3 — the same cut PC owners got as a free update on October 1, five months after the May 21 launch. The console edition carries about 40,000 words of new writing, a new Dramatic Encounter, Backstage Mode with art-director commentary, completed English voice-over, new outfits, ultrawide support and interface fixes. The shadow over it: ZA/UM issued redundancy or at-risk notices to up to 32 staff on July 17. A beloved studio's first post-Disco Elysium game arriving in expanded form while its own staff face cuts is the industry's 2026 story in miniature.

Pokémon TCG Live 1.44: Delta Reign arrives November 5, maintenance at 8 a.m. PST November 3
Pokémon TCG Live's version 1.44.0 update lands in early November with Mega Evolution — Delta Reign, the final expansion of 2026 for both the physical game and TCG Live, plus a brand-new battle pass. Maintenance starts 8:00 a.m. PST on November 3, with the expansion itself playable November 5 — ahead of tournament legality in the physical game, so digital players get the cards first. If the maintenance window catches you mid-ladder, that is the schedule, not a surprise.

Deadlock's Halloween dressing vanishes after November 2 — the balance changes stay
Valve's Deadlock Halloween 2026 update — candy cauldrons, the Sugar Rush buff, hero masks, pumpkin crates and the reworked Mid-Boss (20% more health, halved resistance reductions, a Rejuvenator split into three breakable crystals) across 34 heroes and 38 items — keeps its seasonal dressing only through November 2. After that the candy, masks and pumpkins go away; the Mid-Boss rework and the balance changes stay. Today is the last full day to eat candy in a MOBA and call it strategy.
